Canada is the destination that made half the JDM internet possible. The 15-year rule means a whole generation of Japanese metal becomes legally importable every single year, and we have been loading Vancouver-bound containers long enough to know exactly which cars clear smoothly and which ones generate phone calls. Here is the honest version of how it works in 2026.
The 15-Year Rule, Explained Properly#
Canada's federal rule is simple and generous: a vehicle 15 years old or older is exempt from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program and does not need to be converted to meet CMVSS, the Canadian federal motor vehicle safety standard. No compliance modifications, no RIV inspection process — the car imports as-is.
What that means in practice for 2026: anything built in 2011 or earlier is on the table. The window has now rolled far enough to swallow some genuinely modern machinery — late R35-era performance cars aside, you are looking at clean 2010–2011 Delicas, big-body Alphards, and the last of the properly analog sports cars, all with the electronics and safety kit of a modern car.
Compare that with the United States' 25-year rule and you see why so many cars we buy at auction have a Canadian buyer's name on them before the hammer falls.
Two cautions:
- The 15 years is measured from the manufacture date, not the model year. We confirm the build date from the chassis records before you commit, because a January-vs-December build can move your import window by a year.
- Federal exemption is not the whole story. You still clear customs, pay duty and taxes, and register provincially.
Quebec Is Its Own Country (For Import Purposes)#
If your buyer — or you — are registering in Quebec, stop and do extra homework. Quebec applies its own, stricter provincial rules on top of the federal exemption, and vehicles that register without drama in British Columbia or Ontario can face additional requirements there. The rules have shifted over the years, so verify the current SAAQ position for your specific vehicle before you buy, not after it lands. We flag this on every Quebec-bound quote.
What the Landed Cost Looks Like#
Federal exemption does not mean tax-free. Budget for:

Rust matters more for Canada than for any other market we serve. A car that lived in Okinawa or coastal Hokkaido may carry underbody corrosion that will not survive Canadian winters plus road salt. Shipping to Vancouver#
Vancouver is our main Canadian gateway and the sailings from Japan are frequent. RoRo is the budget option for a single running vehicle; shared or full containers make sense from two cars upward, and most of our dealer clients consolidate three or four units per box. Transit time depends on the carrier's schedule — we confirm the sailing when we book. Once landed, your customs broker clears the car and you register it in your province.

FAQ#
Can I import a 14-year-old car and store it until it turns 15?#
No — the vehicle must already meet the age requirement when it is imported into Canada. We keep a watch list for clients and buy the car at auction when the window opens; tell us what you are waiting for.
Does the 15-year rule apply in Quebec too?#
The federal exemption applies at the border, but Quebec layers its own provincial requirements on registration. Verify the current SAAQ rules for your vehicle before buying if it will be registered in Quebec.
Are right-hand-drive cars legal to drive in Canada?#
RHD vehicles imported under the 15-year exemption are registrable in most provinces, though insurance treatment varies by insurer and province. Talk to your insurer before the car is on the water, not after.
